Data security in educational institutions is crucial, as schools handle a vast amount of sensitive information, including students' personal details, academic records, and financial transactions. In Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State, many secondary schools still rely on traditional paper-based systems or outdated digital platforms to manage student data, leaving them vulnerable to data breaches, unauthorized access, and loss of critical information.
School management systems (SMS) are used to store, process, and manage student and administrative data, but without adequate data security measures, these systems can become prime targets for cyberattacks. Implementing robust data security measures, such as encryption, access controls, and secure cloud storage, is essential to protect sensitive data. This study aims to assess the data security practices in SMS used in secondary schools in Zaria and propose strategies for enhancing security through modern technology.
Statement of the Problem
Many secondary schools in Zaria, Kaduna State, lack adequate data security measures in their school management systems, exposing sensitive student information to risks of theft, loss, or unauthorized access. This problem has become more urgent as schools increasingly rely on digital systems for data management.

To assess the current data security practices in school management systems used in secondary schools in Zaria Local Government Area.
To design and implement enhanced data security measures for school management systems in the selected schools.
To evaluate the effectiveness of the new data security measures in preventing unauthorized access and data breaches.
